A free 3D flight simulator built to prepare you for real flight school
VR Flying Simulator is a free flight simulator that runs in your web browser, with no download and no account. It started with one goal: learning to fly is expensive, so why not show up to your first lesson already knowing the controls, the instruments, the checklists and the vocabulary? Every airplane here uses a real physics model with lift, drag, stalls, ground effect, engine spool-up and wind, and every lesson follows procedures taught in the FAA's own training handbooks.
It's also just fun. Take a 747-class jumbo into the sunset, shoot ILS approaches through the clouds, dogfight enemy jets in the fighter, or see how smooth your landing can be in the landing challenge. It works on desktop and mobile, and in real 3D with a VR headset, a phone VR viewer or red/cyan glasses.

Aircraft are generic simulations modeled on real aircraft classes and published typical speeds. They are not affiliated with or endorsed by any manufacturer, and numbers are simplified for training and entertainment.
How to use this flight simulator as flight school prep
A home simulator won't teach you the feel of a real airplane, and it doesn't count toward your logged flight hours. What it can do is make every paid hour count, because you won't be learning where the switches are while the Hobbs meter runs. Here is the approach Zach recommends:
- Learn the controls and instruments. Fly Lessons 1 through 5 in the 172-class trainer until the attitude indicator, airspeed and altimeter feel natural.
- Practice procedures, not just flying. Say your checklists out loud: before takeoff, climb, cruise, descent, before landing. Use the traffic pattern lesson to learn the legs and where to configure.
- Study for the written test now. The private pilot knowledge test is 60 multiple-choice questions, you get 2.5 hours, and you need 70% to pass. Passing it before or early in training saves a lot of money.
- Read the Airman Certification Standards (ACS). It lists every task and tolerance on your checkride, such as holding altitude within ±100 feet. Practice those tolerances here.
- Book a discovery flight. Fly with a real instructor, then come back and practice what you learned.
What does it take to get a private pilot license?
Under 14 CFR 61.109, a private pilot certificate for airplanes requires at least 40 hours of flight time, including 20 hours with an instructor and 10 hours solo. The dual training includes 3 hours of cross-country, 3 hours at night (with a 100-nautical-mile night cross-country and 10 night takeoffs and landings to a full stop), 3 hours of instrument training and 3 hours of checkride preparation. The solo time includes a cross-country of at least 150 nautical miles with full-stop landings at three points. You must be at least 17 to earn the certificate, 16 to fly solo as a student, and you'll need an FAA medical certificate (or qualify for BasicMed) and pass both the knowledge test and a practical test (the checkride). Most people need more than the 40-hour minimum, which is exactly why preparing first pays off.

Features that make it realistic
- Real flight physics: lift and drag from angle of attack, stalls and wing drop, ground effect, flaps, gear drag, jet engine spool-up, crosswinds and turbulence.
- Working instruments: primary flight display with speed and altitude tapes, navigation display with airports, engine indication, and a steam-gauge six-pack in the trainers.
- A working ILS and PAPI on runway 27 at KVRF. The PAPI lights change from white to red as you go above or below the glide path, just like the real thing.
- Weather and time: clear to thunderstorms, snow and fog, with a full day and night cycle and runway lighting.

Is VR Flying Simulator really free?
Yes. It runs free in your web browser with no download, account or payment. You need a device and browser that support WebGL 2, such as recent Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari.
Can a flight simulator help me get my pilot license?
It can help you prepare, but it cannot replace real training. Home simulators like this one don't count toward logged flight time. They are excellent for learning controls, instruments, checklists, procedures and vocabulary, so your paid lessons with a certificated flight instructor go further.
How many hours does it take to get a private pilot license?
The FAA minimum for a private pilot certificate for airplanes is 40 hours of flight time under 14 CFR 61.109, including 20 hours with an instructor and 10 hours solo. Most students need more than the minimum.
How old do you have to be to fly a plane?
You must be at least 16 to fly solo as a student pilot in an airplane and at least 17 to earn a private pilot certificate. There is no upper age limit as long as you can hold the required medical certification.
Which airplane should a beginner fly first?
Start with the 172-class trainer. It is modeled on the most common type of training airplane, with a high wing, fixed landing gear and forgiving handling. Lesson 1 in the Training menu walks you through the controls.
Does the flight simulator work in VR?
Yes. Choose VR headset (WebXR) in the Flight deck menu when using a headset browser such as Meta Quest. You can also use side-by-side 3D with a phone VR viewer, or red/cyan 3D glasses. Without any goggles, the normal view is full 3D.
Who is Zach?
Zach is the virtual flight instructor built into the simulator. He answers questions about flying, reads your instruments while you fly and briefs every lesson. His lessons are based on FAA handbooks and regulations, but he is not an FAA-certificated flight instructor.
Can I play it on my phone?
Yes. On touch screens you get an on-screen control stick, a throttle slider and buttons for gear, flaps, brakes, views and weapons. A computer with a keyboard, mouse or gamepad gives the most precise control.
VR Flying Simulator is for education and entertainment. It is not an FAA-approved training device, and time spent here cannot be logged as flight time. Zach is a virtual instructor persona, not an FAA-certificated flight instructor. Always train with a certificated flight instructor (CFI).
